Stop saying yes to everything

In business, it is always good to take a break and reflect on what has worked, what has been enjoyable and equally what hasn’t worked so well. Ed and I did a lot in 2014, we built a kitchen, a trailer and did various types of events. It was our first year trading and our motto was to say ‘yes’ to everything. On the contrary our motto for 2015 is to stop saying ‘yes’ to everything as we now know what works for us.

The Wandering Lodge, the trailer we built this time last year.

So this year for us is all about keeping it simple and focus on our Village Restaurant events, special occasion events in Rosie’s Tea Room in Abingdon and summer music festivals. Not only are these the things that were the best for us financially last year, they are also the things that Ed and I have enjoyed the most. The whole point of running your own business it to enjoy it, right?

Our Village Restaurant events are going from strength to strength, we are getting well known for transforming village halls into beautiful boutique style restaurants and Ed is getting equally well known for how well he can cook a piece of beef. We love being able to use spaces that are not commonly thought as beautiful and transforming them, we also love that because we don’t have the overheads of a static restaurant we can invest the money into the ingredients and food. It’s working and we got some great feedback before Christmas: “Amazing food, lovely atmosphere and great service. A real change from your normal night out around town.” It was a no brainer that this was where we should be focussing our efforts. Find out where you can find us.

At our Village Restaurant you will get four courses of delicious home cooked food.

Our Christmas dinner in Rosie’s Tea Room in Abingdon was fantastic, there was a great atmosphere and it left us on a high. Ed and I love working in Rosie’s, it is a beautiful space and has a great feel about it, we also really enjoy working with the owner Liz. It didn’t work for us doing a weekly pop-up there as we couldn’t get the bookings but when Ady and Viv left us this comment on our Facebook page after our Christmas Dinner, we thought we had to keep returning: “It was amazing. I can’t believe how much we ate but it was too good not to eat it all. Great atmosphere too. Can’t wait for the next one.” We will be back for Burns Night, Valentine’s, Mother’s Day and Easter Sunday, full details on our website.

Finally Summer festival, the highlight for us last year were weekend music festivals. Why? For me, I love them, I love going to them, I love camping, I love the music, I love the people, it’s fun, there is buzz. For Ed they are really busy, our trailer has a queue, the grill is constantly going. We work hard serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, but this is why we work in this industry for the busy days, there is nothing like a busy service, if you can take the heat, that is!

I have listed our 2015 Village restaurant and Rosie’s events below or let us know if you are organising a Summer festival that you think we would fit in at.

See you at The Wandering Kitchen,
